Oscar de la Renta Retrospective

Oscar de la Renta Retrospective

As promised, a review of the Oscar Retrospective.

Visited the de Young Museum in San Francisco last week to take in the Oscar de la Renta Retrospective.  Mr. de la Renta (1932-2014) was an internationally known fashion designer from Dominican Republic who rose to prominence in the sixties as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy.

Have visited a slew of museum fashion shows in the last few years and their popularity is not abating.  A recent WSJ article touts current shows from Paris to LA.  Am getting a bit jaded with the typical museum displays of low lighting series of ball gowns.  How many of us live that kind of life?  May have envied that kind of seemingly glamorous life at one point, but am quite satisfied with my lifestyle where I can put on one ensemble in the AM and take the same one off in the PM.

Was hoping to discover some design inspiration and, perhaps, a sewing technique.  Alas, it was not to be so/sew.

Will be attending the Manus X Machina exhibit at the Met with higher expectations as it is described as presenting hand and machine sewing.  Andrew Bolton, the show curator, describes the exhibit as showing the interrelationship of hand and machine to accomplish RTW as well as Haute Couture.  And, Mr Bolton's exhibit..."arrange them in a show that families from Duluth fly in to see and that jaded experts find entirely fresh."  Keeping my fingers crossed.

But, on to Oscar.

Keep in mind, this is Haute Couture, not RTW.
