Updated Chevron Striped Skirt

by Carol Neumann

It’s a striped fashion world–stripes continue to be in the forefront of 2013 fashion.

And, now a striped skirt is available for you to wear; it’s on my Etsy site.

I picked up this Jones New York Signature chevron striped skirt at the end of last season just knowing it would be perfect for a 2013 wardrobe.

Before

When I saw this skirt, I had to have it as it is very well made; note how the stripes exactly match in the chevron design. If you sew, you know what a pain it is to match; one seam–maybe not so much, but eight seams (eight gores)…

MATCHED STRIPES

And the inside facing is finished with red binding; no one sees it but the wearer and it just makes me smile!

STRIPE SKT INSIDE 2

This basic skirt needed some life so added a sheer polka dot hem ruffle embellished with polka dot ribbon on the outside and red, white, blue striped ribbon on the inside. When you sit, the wrong side of the hem always shows; now it is a pretty as the right side! The original belt has been replaced with polka dot grosgrain ribbon–to wear or not.

It was on SALE

by Carol Neumann

Yep, I got suckered in again by that favorite of all signs–SALE.                                                  A close second fave sign is CLEARANCE.

Cruising thru Joann’s Fabrics (the only local fabric store) and skidded to a stop at the CLEARANCE sign for trims and scooped up some items that ‘speak’ to me.  Went back the next day for the 50% off sale/off sale (that’s 50% off the sale price) and scored a couple of fabrics.

Am sharing the wealth by listing  on My Etsy shop.  Take a look and order now before I figure out a project of my own.  (Click on each photo to go directly to Etsy.)                            If nothing else, enjoy my SALE euphoria.

Jumbo Black Lurex Ric Rac

Black/White Glen Plaid Wool

100% white cotton with diagonal embellishments.

Only one yard of the wool; enuf for a pencil skirt or a wrap.

The Jumbo Ric Rac is the perfect trim–at the hem of a skirt, edging of wrap where it will provide some weight to hold wrap in place.

This just might be Nighties for the Grands.

ZIPPER JEWELRY

100_1118Zipper jewelry, aka jewelry made from zippers, has been around for a long time.  I’ve never made it but am tempted now that I ran across a SALE (don’t you just Love that Word!) on Fiber Art trims.  Figured it was an excellent item on my Etsy account but it just may get pulled and into my own project stash.

The reason for the change of heart?  A stuck jewelry drawer–don’t ask!   The culprit was a  Zipper Pin, hence this blog and possible change of heart.  Below is the zipper pin, and the reason am so sure of the date is it was the week of the Oklahoma City Bombing.

The sample is very intricate.  It consists of a wood block with snips of zippers cut and pasted in place; most of the twill tape has been removed.

The original glue has dried up and needs re-glueing.  The good news is, glue products have vastly improved and now come with pinpoint tips, indispensable for ity-bity work.

But they can be simple too, judging from Pinterest.   A caveat about the items on the linked Pinterest page:  This is an artist, so use to admire and for inspiration ONLY.

Just a quick Google brought up this tutorial from Craftsy.  Here’s a start for a new, satisfying craft.  And a stash of gifts and/or craft fair items.

And here is one of thousands YouTube zipper tutorials.

Happy Zipping!

BRIGHT AND SHINY

Bright and Shiny

Romeo & Juliet Couture
Studded Collar Envelope Blouse

Studded embellishments have been making their fashion appearance for the past 18 months.  I first saw studs on heels of pumps and sandals.  In 2013, studs continue their expansion to all apparel.

These are different from the rhinestone, crystal gems that are always popular.  These are metallic studs typically inserted through the garment and fastened with a backing.  This type of stud is heavy and needs to have a facing/backing to protect the stud backing but is perfect for leather, e.g., motorcycle jackets and belts.

The iron-on studs are lightweight and backed with a fusible adhesive activated by an iron or a Hot Fix Tool Applicator that comes with several  tips to fit multiple sized iron-on studs/jewels.

The above inspiration has galavanized me to dig out a certain blouse relegated to the back of the closet as “too good” to dispose of–and rejected by the consignment shop.

Watch this space for the update.

By the way, apparently, ‘blouse’ is an archaic term. I heard it on the Internet, so it must be true.

On reflection, I do find myself calling tailored garments with collars and cuffs, ‘shirts’. But, when I Googled this particular garment, everything was labeled as ‘blouse’. The copywriter’s must not have gotten the message.

Hello, tailor.: Chanel, Spring 2013

2.10.13 SNOWWhat better way to spend a cold, snowy day in Minnesota than perusing Spring Couture Fashion.  I don’t waste  time clicking thru ready-to-wear (RTW) as I can probably afford a piece or two.  But COUTURE is another story; it’s fascinating, enthralling, engaging,  mainly because it is so unattainable.

Have no idea where or how this fascination with fashion developed, but recall spending my entire teenage allowance on Vogue magazine back in the ’50’s.  Certainly wasn’t influenced by The Farm Journal or The Farmer which were the usual magazines; they even served women with recipes and house-dress patterns.

So here I am in 2013 clicking through slides from the recent Couture Fashion shows, rather than flipping  pages, and salivating over the most awesome collection of shoes EVER!   And, they come in several styles and more than one color combo.                       AND, the wide heel and wedge appear to be really stable as knee replacement just might rule out stilettos.

Start clicking to see for yourself and enjoy Hello Tailor’s commentary.

UNIDENTIFIED VINTAGE TEXTILE BY GLORIA VANDERBILT FOR BLOOMCRAFT

Discovered these two pieces of fabric during a midnight raid on the fabric stash.  Always good to have a stash to satisfy shopping urges 24/7!GV Victorian Man & Lady

So, here are the two pieces; each approximately 14″ square.  They are serigraphs on fabric for Bloomcraft designed by Gloria Vanderbilt during her collage phase in the late ’60’s and into the ’70’s.  I know this because ‘GV’ and ‘Bloomcraft’ are printed on the selvage.  The collage and serigraphs were discovered with great difficulty in bits and pieces from a tangled web (an appropriate tag) of websites.

And that is all I know and can find out.  Bloomcraft apparently no longer exists, at least under that name.  Gloria Vanderbilt is still living (b. 1924) but all Wikipedia has to say is that she designed textiles at one point in her career.

Goggle did produce a few pictures of her collages which are probably what inspired the textile designs.  Have found several “Southern Belle” fabrics on Etsy.  But nothing about the Victorian Couple in my fabric.

So, am throwing it out to the WWW (world wide web); any information will be greatly appreciated.  Am especially interested in what the original price was.

I look forward to your comments.

Clorox vs Peroxide

Clorox

Hydrogen Peroxide

December 19, 2014 Update

Here is a very thorough review of advantages of Peroxide.

Post by Brian Wilkinson.

Have you received an email that begins…

“My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years.  And most doctors don’t tell you about peroxide.”

Well, I have and was compelled to research fact/fiction as that brown bottle has been under my sink ever since I moved out of Mom’s house and took the spare bottle with me.
The photo above is of a really old bottle and one just purchased ($.89/quart). Hydrogen Peroxide does disintegrate with light–hence the brown bottle–and age; the small bottle will be disposed of as it sports a Snyder Drug Store label–Snyder’s has been out of biz for over 10 years. The great news is that the contents can be poured down the drain; HP is water and oxygen and decomposes into it’s parts. So pour away, rinse and recycle bottle. I never know what to do with Clorox/bleach bottles; can diluted/rinsed contents be poured down the drain? Duh, guess so; just realized diluted bleach goes thru the washing machine and into sewer/septic. Whew, another dilemma that won’t keep me awake at night!

Essentially, the email touts peroxide over ‘Clorox’.  (FYI:  Clorox is a brand name for a company who makes both ‘Clorox’ and Hydrogen Peroxide.)  Many of the claims in the email are true and some aren’t so  much.  Review the email for yourself at snopes.

Here are some high points of what I learned:

Clorox:  a bleach/disinfectant made from sodium hypoclorite, basically liquid chlorine, that is extremely corrosive and will eat away fabric, skin, metal, etc., in its undiluted form.

Hydrogen Peroxide is also a bleach/disinfectant whose chemical composition is oxygen and water.  Both of these ingredients are non-toxic and can be washed away with water with no environmental concerns.  One caveat:  HP is a bleach and will bleach anything it contacts.  However, the common concentration of 3% available in drug stores, is mild enough to use for mouth wash and toothpaste.  HP is probably best used in the home as a disinfectant due to it’s safety and odorless composition. And, HP is the preferred hospital disinfectant.

Here’s an HP recommenation from WebMD regarding pregnancy.  “ Clean Naturally. For safer scrubbing, switch from chemical cleaners to more natural products — such as hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and vinegar.”

Check out The Many Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide by Dr. David G Williams. This is just one of many, many websites with similar information but liked this one due to its organization and writing.

I find the garden applications most helpful.  HP (H2OO2) occurs naturally in rainwater and this is why rainwater is more efficient than tap water; H2OO2 provides more oxygen for plants thus promoting growth.

Oh yes, highly concentrated solutions of hydrogen peroxide are used for rocket propellant.

Get Stickered

Do you mark magazines by turning down a corner, put the irritating ad inserts to some use by marking a page?  But the ‘markers’ fall out and you just can’t find tagged corners–why is that I wonder?  Well, help is here from Lucky Magazine.  They insert a Stickers Page–different design every month.

Stickers from June Issue

This is the greatest idea since sliced bread, just peel and stick.

My latest Stickered magazine

At the first magazine review, pages I want to go back to are Stickered.  I also tear out the Sticker page and use on all magazines, catalogs, books, etc.  Thanks Lucky!

Now, when the mag stack needs editing, it’s a quick flip thru by Sticker and tear to save (I keep a file folder somewhere on the coffee table); or curl my lip at, “What was I thinking of!”  Off to Recycling!

Have even been known to drop on the Library’s freebie table.  FYI:  remove address label.

Inspiration Strikes

Shawl back

Cocoon Shawl

I have a habit of buying fabric on the fly  – without a clue as to what it will be.  This is quite handy as I always can shop from home when the stores are closed.  And, I generally get the shopping bug in the middle of the night and can’t rest until the stash is thoroughly searched.
This is what happened with two pieces of poly knit purchased at a close out sale.  Loved the flower motif even tho I am more of a graphic person.  So it has been in my stash for two years and the fabric ended up on the cutting board after one of those midnight rampages.  Started playing with it, which lead to digging through patterns (you do know fabriholics are also patternaholics!  One good addiction leads to another.)

Nothing was quite right so decided it would be a good TV blanket.  And then, one night (in the middle of ‘Masterpiece Theatre’), Inspiration struck–the slots in the selvedge just begged for lacing.  But what would I get by  lacing both selvedges together?  Just a smaller rectangle.

So it hung off the edge of the puzzle table until my Muse/consultant berated me for messing up a really good puzzle, at which time I took advantage of an available body for draping.  Between the two of us, we came up with a cocoon shawl.   And, it just so happens the cocoon shape has been revived  again in Fashion Week 2013.

Inspiration Strikes

The Row Spring 2013

For the sleeve ‘hem’, trimmed the crosswise edge around the flower motif; it’s a knit so no raveling.  Gathered several (6-8) strands of yarn, craft cord, ultrasuede, etc., strung on a couple of beads for the center back and laced the selvedges together going through one layer for a couple of inches on each side of center back.  Jazzed it up with the addition of small crystal gems in the center of some of the flowers.  Added cord locks at sleeve hem to adjust sleeve length and VOILA – a Cocoon Shawl, available on Etsy.

Make:  Absolutely no sewing.

2 yards (more or less) fabric; my fabric is 54″ which makes for a long shawl; 45″ width will make a shorter one.  Soft knit fabric will drape and not be too heavy.  Multiple strands of yarn – from my stash (yep, I am also a yarnaholic!), cut to length of fabric; two cord locks; optional – beads for lacing, hotfix gems.

Fold fabric in half lengthwise and lace together leaving one layer free across the neck; experiment with how wide the free layer should be.

My fabric had selvedge slot’s from the loom; you can make slots with a Skip-Stitch blade.  The Blade fits in a cutting handle (think rotary cutter) and makes equa-distance perforations.

Military Fashion

Military inspired garments are the darlings of fashion, from the runways of Fashion Week to Street Wear.  Print, web and blog sightings have been subconsciously stored in my Tickler file.  So when BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform) appeared in Mills Fleet Farm www.millsfleetfarm.com, I impulsively grabbed several, got them home and panicked:  can’t resell on Etsy as is.   A ‘HELP’ call to Daughter got the perfect Neupurpose–add a hood.  Check out the results on Etsy/Neucarol.

Military clothing is readily available on the web:  eBay is good and Google ‘military’ for other sites.

To add a hood, use one of your own sweatshirt hoodies or shop consignment stores.      Tip:  donation shops may accept anything so watch out for excessive wear.
Measure military shirt collar length at neck (where collar is attached to shirt).  Neckline of hood should equal collar neckline.  Sweatshirts are usually larger than shirts of comparable size.  However, I have not found this to be an issue probably because the military shirts are men’s sizes and the hoodies are women’s sizes.  It is possible to alter the hood but is probably not worth the time and effort to refit to the original construction.

Pin sweatshirt to military shirt (hood on top of shirt, right sides together) matching neckline seams; stitch together with sweatshirt/hood on top.  When satisfied with stitching, cut off body of sweatshirt.  My experience is that the weight of the entire sweatshirt anchors the seam in place, so I trim after joining the two garments.  No need to finish the cut edge–fleece doesn’t ravel.

Wear with T and jeans; layer over sweaters and skinny jeans/leggings. Accessorize with oversized scarves, boots, flight bag, and aviator glasses.

Quite fun, especially styling the Inspiration photos from my closet.

Hello world!

Over the years, my sewing room has progressed from boxes under the bed and dining room table to an unfinished basement room to a custom designed 12′ X 30′ room.  When I moved, I downgraded to a 10′ X 19′ room with better storage but, alas, ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’  remains elusive.  When the creative juices flow, digging thru supplies is a necessary pleasure and then you find something you had totally forgotten,  which really gets exciting, which leads to more digging and then the oven timer dings, so shut the door to keep out the Kats….and two weeks later –OMG!
